The Summer Explorers program has reached a remarkable milestone: a decade of inspiring young minds and combating summer learning loss in the Alliance community. What started 10 years ago as a mission to prevent the “summer slide” has grown into a vital educational initiative, touching the lives of hundreds of at-risk elementary students. This journey of impact and achievement wouldn’t have been possible without the leadership of Janelle Jones and Julie Poyser, the support of Rob Gress and Michelle Balderson from Alliance City Schools, the YWCA of Alliance, and the incredible generosity of donors.
More Than Just Learning Retention
While the program’s initial goal was to help students stay on track academically during the summer months, it has since proven capable of so much more. By combining classroom instruction with hands-on experiences, Summer Explorers empowers students to achieve academic growth, develop essential life skills, and spark their natural curiosity.
Field trips have become a cornerstone of the program, taking students beyond their usual surroundings and exposing them to new ideas and possibilities. These experiences ignite imagination and foster a love of learning that transcends the classroom.
A Legacy of Giving Back
A key ingredient in the program’s success has been the involvement of young volunteers, many of whom are alumni of the program themselves. These dedicated individuals return each summer to mentor, assist, and inspire the next generation of Summer Explorers. 2024: A Record Year for Impact
This year, 120 students participated in what has been the most successful Summer Explorers session to date. With a well-coordinated schedule, engaging field trips, and a strong sense of community, the program has continued to build students’ academic skills while fostering emotional resilience.
Sustaining the Future
Operating with an annual budget of $56,000, Summer Explorers relies entirely on donor support to continue its mission. These contributions are essential for sustaining the program’s impact and expanding its reach to more students in the future. Every donation helps provide the resources needed to ensure that Alliance’s young learners can explore, grow, and thrive during the critical summer months.
