The Alliance Commons: Building a Stronger Community

Feb 11, 2025

The Alliance Commons stands as a powerful embodiment of the Greater Alliance Foundation’s mission to empower individuals and foster a stronger community. This dynamic space serves as a hub for accessible services, impactful partnerships, and a collaborative spirit. It enables local nonprofits to join forces in addressing the critical needs of Alliance residents. From food and healthcare to job training, The Alliance Commons brings essential resources together under one roof, right in the heart of our neighborhoods.

Empowering Through Partnerships: The Role of the University of Mount Union

Our impactful partnership with the University of Mount Union and Abby Schroeder, Director of the Regula Center for Public Service and Civic Engagement, has infused The Alliance Commons with renewed energy. Student interns and volunteers play an integral role in supporting partnering nonprofits while gaining invaluable hands-on experience in community service. This collaboration strengthens The Alliance Commons as it bridges the gap between education and community impact, empowering students and residents alike.

The Life-Changing Impact of Nonprofit Partners

The Alliance Commons thrives thanks to the dedication of our nonprofit partners. Together, they make a measurable difference in the lives of countless individuals. Here are just a few examples of their incredible impact:

  • Heart of Ohio Diaper Bank: In 2023, 41 households received 1,350 diapers, period products, wipes, and adult incontinence items—helping families maintain health and dignity.
  • Beacon Charitable Pharmacy: One of the few nonprofit pharmacies in Ohio, Beacon Charitable Pharmacy filled 705 prescriptions valued at over $104,820 in 2023, ensuring uninsured residents had access to vital medications.
  • Challenge Ministries: Providing job readiness and life skills training, Challenge Ministries celebrated the completion of programs by 27 out of 29 participants, helping residents achieve stable employment and brighter futures.
  • YWCA Career & Fashion Boutique: By offering affordable professional attire, the boutique has supported over 3,000 patrons with more than 10,000 items, boosting confidence and readiness for the workforce.
  • StarkFresh: Operating as a nonprofit grocery store in a food desert, StarkFresh served 5,172 customers in 2023, generating $107,386.79 in sales. Of that, $63,525.72 was subsidized through discounts, vouchers, and gift certificates. Additionally, the organization created $68,186.34 in payroll, supporting eight part-time positions filled by local residents.
  • Alliance Area Habitat for Humanity: Through the East Alliance Revitalization Project, this nonprofit has completed or started 11 homes, conducted two roof repairs, and enhanced Maple Beach Park and other neighborhood spaces. Their financial literacy courses, offered in collaboration with GAF, further bolster community resilience.
